It really sounds like your husband wasn't ready yet to go off the medication. Yes i think going off the meds can cause a relapse, especially if he went off them too fast and without slowly reducing the dosage (I am not 100% sure if that has to do with it but I can imagine).
If he talks about suicide you have to always take that seriously! Ask him if he has a specific plan, that is an indicator that he is really serious about it. (Which doesn't eman it is never serious if there is no plan).
Many people are uncomfortable raising that topic and think it might cause the depressed to "get the idea" to commit suicide. From all the advice sites I have visited I have learned that this is not the case, that in reality the depressed/suicidal is relieved if he/she is asked about it.
Well you probably know all that...??
If he is acutely suicidal of course you should call emergency immediately! It is worth it to maybe save his life.
I hope your husband's depression will soon get better. Maybe you should try to convice him to get back on meds. Or is it that you really can't afford them?
