Keep the carbs down, especially the sugars and refined carbs, and you keep the blood sugar down, along with all of the complications. And don't worry about the fat. Fat has little to no effect on blood sugar levels. An excellent book for diabetics is Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, which is available through Amazon. In the book he recommends a very low carb diet for Type I or II diabetics. Alan

: : Yes, a low carb diet would be beneficial for you. Get a copy of Dr. Atkins diet book or better yet, a copy of Protein Power by Dr. Eades. These explain WHY a low carb diet is of benefit not only for weight loss but also for good cardiovascular health. The problem is high insulin levels caused by the consumption of excess carbohydrates, not saturated fat. These books are relatively inexpensive (I paid about $6.00 each) and available at any bookstore. Alan
There are some cautions to be heeded with the extremely low carbohydrate diets for diabetics and those with heart disease or high cholesterol. You need to be very careful to monitor your body and lab values. One thing that is deficient from the Atkins diet is the adequate amount of fiber to protect your body from heart disease, help control the blood sugars and prevent some cancers.
: A modified version of this diet might be a safer way to go - still see the weight loss, but be on a less restrictive, and healthier alternative to long-term health.
