: My son is 30 and has not been able to regulate his sugar for 2 years. It will be 59 before he eats and then shoot to 500. HHe has been in the hospital before for this and could have died. He is losing weight rapidly. He has been an alcoholic and destroyed his pancreas. There is no diabetes in our family. He only drinks light beer once a week now but still goes overboard. Should he see an endocrinologist also? He has always seen a clinic doctor based on his income...thank you, worried mom
The weight loss is an indication that something is going on. He shouldn't consume any alcohol, but I know that you know this. Alcohol will affect his blood sugar. I would suggest that he tell his clinic Dr. about his weight loss and ask him to refer him to a Dr. of internal medicine for an evaluation. The Dr. and tests will cost more. Alcoholism destroys the liver and he needs to stop alcohol if possible. An evaluation would tell you where he stands and where to go from there. i know you are in a hard place. Good Luck.
