: : this is my situation, and i don't even know `if it's a real problem or not. in my opinion, i'ts becoming a problem.
: : i am a 21 y/o college student and i seem to be having issues with food lately. i'm about 132 lbs, and 5'3'' - which
: : seems normal to me. but anyway, lately i sit down to eat and i can eat a ton of food, just gorging myself. for example..
: : i'll come home from school and have some ice cream, about 3 pieces of peanut butter and bread, some chips, 3 bowls of cereal, etc.
: : you get the idea...i eat and EAT (in one sitting)! until i feel sick, then i stop of course. i don't throw my food up and i really have no desire to.
: : obviously doing this makes me feel depressed and tired. i do work out a lot, i love exercise, so i guess that's how i maintain a figure
: : of some sort, but i would like to lose 5-10 pounds and eat MUCH healthier. i can't seem to eat healthy on my own though, and i am
: : worried about my food intake. does anybody have ideas or suggestions on what i should do? is what i am doing called "binging?"

: : Thanks..
: : Amy

: Yes, that's binging. I used to do the same thing. Actually, sometimes I still do. If I don't eat for most of the day, when I get home (like when you get home from school)..I eat everything in sight. I pick on every little thing I have in the house..whether it be ice cream, cookies, chips, left-overs, etc. I took control by not buying that stuff..or if I wanted ice cream...I'd buy sorbet or ice pops. I try to keep busy so I don't "graze". That's really the only thing I've done. I hardly binge anymore.

Yes, what you are doing is called 'binging' and whether you're vomiting or not, you do have an eating disorder. Bulimia nervosa means morbid hunger, and the disorder involves a loss of control over the impulse to binge. You said it yourself, that you are eating tons of food to the point of feeling sick. Well not all bulimics are the purging type, but may use other techniques, such as laxatives or excessive exercise, to accomplish for the binge. Trust me. I'm a 27 year old female with a degree in Kinesiology and Nutrition and you should get control over this NOW before it becomes worse.
The food is not the real issue here. You may be using it to avoid other issues in your life. Try to find out what the REAL problem is, by seeing a counselor on campus, good friend, self-help book, etc. When you get home from classes, do something to stay busy. Go for a long walk, play a sport, just do something.
Whatever you do, DO NOT start counting calories. This is just as bad as overeating. Just eat normally, and don't obsess over every calorie. Obviously, you have a high metabolism if you have not gained weight yet. So simply eat 4-6 small balanced meals a day and try to drink at least one meal replacement shake a day and get regular physical exercise. Balance is the key!! Good luck.
