: HCRC FAQ Sheet
: Berry
: Trim Plus:
: By Ellen Coleman, RD, MA, MPH
: The Health Laboratory of North America products Berry Trim Plus
: and Chroma Slim are not effective (they do not enhance weight loss)
: and they have ingredients that may be unsafe if consumed in large
: amounts over a long time period. Purchase of this product is not
: recommended.: The Georgia Council Against Health Fraud and National Council
: Against Health Fraud have received numerous complaints that the
: product is ineffective and that Health Labs of North America does not
: honor its money back guarantee. The Sept-Oct 1989 NCAHF
: Newsletter exposed Berry Trim's dirty little trick of attaching post-its
: to phony full paged ads to make it seem as if a personal friend had sent
: the ad to a recipient. The Jan-Feb 1991 NCAHF Newsletter
: reported that Berry Trim had been given the 1990 Slim Chance award
: by Obesity & Health Journal.: At present, the district attourney of a county in California is planning to
: take legal action against Health Labs because of the false weight loss
: claims made for Berry Trim.: Below are claims and facts regarding some of the ingredients for Berry
: Trim:: L-Taurine
: Claim:"Controls fat digestion"
: Fact: Taurine is the second most common free amino acid in
: human skeletal muscle. Taurine may enhance the action of
: insulin but there is no evidence that taurine affects fat digestion.: Korean Ginseng Extract
: Claim: "A natural energy booster"
: Fact: Ginseng is promoted as a cure-all, an adaptogen
: (increases resistance to stress and disease), and supposedly
: improves energy and endurance. No other drug has all the
: healthful properties that are attributed to ginseng, but the
: existence of a genuine "cure-all" is unlikely. Claims that ginseng
: has medicinal value should be considered unproven until proper
: research has been conducted.: Ginsenosides are thought to be responsible for whatever
: pharmacological activity ginseng might possesses. The best
: documented side effects of ginseng are insomnia, and to a lesser
: degree, diarrhea and skin eruption. The prolonged use of
: ginseng seems to be relatively safe.: Octacosanol
: Claim: "Improves endurance"
: Fact: Octacosanol is a solid white alcohol that is extracted from
: wheat germ oil. This substance is advertised as being the
: principle ingredient in wheat germ oil that supposedly promotes
: endurance, strength, and vigor.: A thorough analysis of studies has not supported the claim that
: wheat germ oil is an effective performance aid. This evidence
: was used successfully by the Federal Trade Commission to ban
: advertising claims that wheat germ could improve endurance,
: strength, and vigor.: Hydroxycitrate (HCA)
: Claim: "Releases calories already stored within you body
: tissues as fat: Fact: There might be some rationale to this compound in
: diverting carbohydrate calories to glycogen (rather than fat) and
: reducing appetite. This is supported by animal studies and some
: preliminary human studies, but it has yet to be shown
: convincingly to be useful in weight loss.: GLA (gamma linolenic acid (GLA)
: Claim: "Vital to the fat burning process"
: Fact: Gamma linolenic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid found in
: black currant seed, evening primrose, and flaxseed oils.
: Gamma-linolenic acid can be converted to a hormone-like
: compound called prostoglandin E-1. Prostoglandin E-1 helps to
: increase blood flow, decrease blood clotting, and reduce
: inflammation. It's thought that omega-3's from fish oils may be
: more effective than linolenic acid in increasing prostoglandin-E1.: The claim is that gamma linolenic acid works by increasing the
: body's production of prostoglandin E-1 or by correcting a
: deficiency of gamma-linolenic acid. However, these claims have
: not been proven and the long-term safety of consuming large
: quantities of these oils has not been established. There is no
: evidence that gamma linolenic acid improves fat burning.: L-Carnitine
: Claim: "The transportation system of the fat burning process"
: Fact: Carnitine is used to move fatty acids into the
: mitochondria, where they are oxidized for ATP production.
: However, your body can make it yourself, so supplements
: aren't necessary or helpful. There is no evidence that carnitine
: increases fat burning or decreases body fat.: Chromium picolinate
: Claim: "Burns fat"
: Fact: Chromium is needed for glucose tolerance factor, which
: helps insulin act. However, there is no reason to think that most
: people are chromium deficient and so eating more probably
: won't help. Last year the FTC reached a consent agreement
: with marketers of chromium picolinate designed to stop their
: unsupported and fraudulent claims.: L-phenylalanine
: Claim: "A natural appetite suppressant."
: Fact: Even though phenylalamine is an amino acid, it is being
: promoted as a drug to affect brain function. Phenylalanine is
: present in protein in the diet and there is no evidence that
: consuming large amounts enhance the production of brain
: neurotransmitters to suppress the appetite.: Vitamin B6
: Claim: "Necessary for production of hydrochloric acid to
: absorb fats and protein": Fact: Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is important for amino acid
: metabolism.: However, toxicity has been documented in women who have
: taken supplements to alleviate premenstrual symptoms. Excess
: B6 can cause neurological symptoms similar to multiple
: sclerosis, including numbness and tingling of the hands, difficulty
: in walking, and electric shocks shooting down the spine.
: Toxicity has been reported in people taking as little as 200 mg
: -- the RDA for vitamin B6 is about 2 mg.: For More Information

: Health Care Reality Check
: Website © GCAHF, Inc.I can't believe people actually try to get away with things like this! I received my "newspaper clipping" yesterday, and, of course, I wanted to check up on it over the internet first...and what a good thing I did! It's sad how some people prey on the weaknesses of others!!!
