: Hi! I am a 28 year old suffering from GERD due to a hiatal hernia. I have been on a combination of Prilosec, Pepcid and Maalox and still have symptoms and have had to alter my life, as I am sure many of you have. I am seriously considering having a nissen fundoplication, where they wrap you the top of your stomach around your esphogeous. Has anyone had this prodecure? If so, what are the pros and cons?
I had a fundoplication in Sept,98. The doctors said I had a 50% 50% chance of it working. I figured what would be the chance that it not work for me. I am now 16 and wish that I would of never had this done. I had major complications and was in the hospital for a month. I almost died. 2in above my belly button I have a scar that reaches to my ribs.
I have had alot of problems swallowing enen more and have to have dialations every 2 to 3 months. They said that I was not going to be able to vomit but I still can it is just more painful than ever. I can not go to school because of my stomach.
I dont want to scare you but this surgery doesnt work for everyone. Ask your doctor about haveing it done microscopicly. A close friend had that done and he had the same symptoms as me and he recovered in 5 days, where for me i am not going to recover. I now have a g-tube on the left side of my belly button that I now eat from instead of my mouth.
