: For the past 16 months, I have been constantly burping which is sometimes consistent with mild nauseau/hearburn. The burps aren't foul smelling or the like, and are consistant from when I wake up to when I go to bed. I've found that chewing gum helps these symptoms and take prevacid almost every day (which really doesn't help much). I have been to doctors and tave taken several tests, but nothing has shown up. I was eventually told that it was "functional". Does anyone else have these problems, and if so, what's wrong with me??? Thanks.
I have had the same symptoms.
Belching/burping excessively is the result of swollowing air.The esophagus is a unique muscle --it's about 9 inches long and no other muscle in the body works like it.When you were told it's functional --I think that means your esophagus is not working like it should. You are probably swallowing some amount of air every time you swollow. As it builds-up you burp. Chewing gum I think would make it worse.Think about it ---chewing helps you make more salvia that you swollow with some air that you have to burp. I would quit chewing and try to swollow as little as possible. Gas X may help. There is also a homeopathic remedy---Carbo Veg. 30X that help get rid of gas.Taking a Calcium/Magnesium supplement will help your muscles work better.
For Nausea you could try a homeoathic remedy--- Ipecacuanha 30X. It's great for persistent nausea.Just take it like it says on the bottle.
It's not costly and it worth a try----it works!!!
