There has been some success with getting the attention of legislators!
Language has made it into the House and Senate Bills strongly encouraging the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NAID ) and Center for Disease Control( CDC) to pursue research into an infectious cause of Crohn’s disease.!! It is my understanding that this kind of language will be taken very seriously by the federal agencies. And I am sure that this success is due to the efforts of “crohnies”, their family’s and friend’s writing to their Congressmen! Details of all this is accesssible at http://www.crohns.org
As I might have already told you, two women were in Washington DC for two weeks in May meeting with every congressional and senate appropriations committee member or their aide in an effort to get funding for research into an infectious cause of Crohns. It appears that several groups, acting completely independently, had been writing letters to congressmen. It appears this has all coincidentally or divinely come together.
Efforts are now underway to try to get an amendment introduced that would strengthen the language, either by requiring the NIAID and CDC to report their progress to Congress at specified times, or by earmarking money.
If you are willing to send more letters, or get involved for the first time, e-mail me back, and I will forward to you a new letter with very specific recommendations for an amendment to the current bills. You can also access this same information yourself at http://www.crohns.org
If you are already supporting this effort and are still getting some of the original letters signed, that is ok. They continue to call attention to the original issue.
It appears that final decisions will be made before the end of September. Whenever I find out it is all over, I will post on bulletin boards to let everyone know, or you can check out the above-listed web site.
Thank you !! Thanks so much for whatever letters you have been able to get out asking for congressional financial support for research into an infectious cause of Crohns!!
