: It sounds like you are all having panic attacks
Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. Chest pain can cause panic attacks,
and, I suppose, vice-versa... but having suffered from some rather severe bouts with both
panic/anixiety and GERD, I can tell you definbitively that no one could mistake one for the other.
GERD causes a chronic pain which can become severe at times, but it doesn't create the
hair-standing-on-end, oh-my-god-I'm-gonna-die _feeling_ that panic attacks do. (Unless
a spasm wakes you up just as you're falling asleep. _That_ was scary the first few
times it happened, but now I find that when I discover I'm still breathing a minute
later I can just laugh it off.)
My doctor has been switching me around with various drugs (Prevacid, Protonix,
AcidPhex so far), in the hopes that one will do a good job of targeting my particular
stomache chemistry. There's been _some_ relief with the Protonix and I'm about to
start the AcidPhex tonite. I suspect that the real cure is to lose 30 lbs, get more
exercise and not eat/drink anything between dinner and bedtime. But I'm lazy as well as
optimistic by nature so I'll try however many drugs the doc wants to try and continue
sleeping with lots of pillows until we run out of standard treatment options. Then I'll
dust off the bicycle, buy the Slimfast and take 6 months getting better the hard way.
Of course, winning a lottery and being able to lose ALL my job stress would probably
work too, but I'll bet my odds are lots better with the medications. :)
