Hi Linda and Tina,
I think both of you ladys are right. Perhaps folks are a little afraid of disabled people, most of us are afraid of what we don't understand.
I have degenerative disc disease and arthritus in my lumbar vertabrates and am also a big person, so I can relate to your grocery store incident. I use a cane and have started using the electric scooters at some of the stores when they provide them. The scooters sure help because I can not walk far at all before the pain forces me off my feet. Handicap parking is another great thing.
Leon
