Rob (and any others facing this decision),
Please take some time and find out if there are any government programs that could assist you in taking care of your son yourselves. Once the shock of having a child with special needs has worn off, you will find that each day is more fulfilling than the next. With the help of programs like Medicaid and the Children's Special Health Care, we have been able to cope with staggering medical bills. Early Intervention programs will put you in contact with wonderful people who will help so much. You will meet so many incredible and strong people. Please consider reading a wonderful book I just finished reading. It is called "Another Season", by college and professional football coach Gene Stallings. It is the story of the challenges faced by his family as they raised their son, John. I found it inspirational. I only hope I can be the kind of parent that he has proven himself to be.
I also recommend getting involved with a parent support group. They can help you heal and help put you in touch with the right kind of people to support you no matter what you decide. My heart aches for you, we here can truly say we share your pain. May God Bless you and help you make the best decision for your family.
