I am the mother of a beautiful little five year old girl with DS. She is and has been such a wonderful gift from God. I have a son who was eight at the time of Kimberlee's birth, but I simply cannot imagine the stress this couple must be under right now. Having twins under any condition has to be stressful, but having one with special needs just compounds everything. I will say that one thing that we did shortly after getting Kimberlee's diagnosis was send out a birth announcement explaining that we wanted everyone to celebrate Kimberlee's birth with us and to feel free to ask questions about her and her well-being. We explained how we knew that God in His infinite wisdom knew about Kimberlee's condition before she was born, according to Psalms
where it states that he sees us before we are born. It was the most wonderful thing we could have done for ourselves and Kimberlee. We had to most wonderful response from our church members, co-workers and friends and family. They felt so much more comfortable to react to Kimberlee as they would have to any other baby. Our acceptance of Kimberlee, just as God had sent her to us, allowed them to be able to do the same and feel comfortable with her.
As a parent myself, I know that time will heal the pain that this couple may be feeling. There is a contemporary christian song I heard shortly after Kimberlee was born that said it all to me.
The lyrics said, "You have turned my mourning into dancing, Lord, now my feet are filled with your praise." Kimberlee has and continues to give us wonderful reasons "to dance" and praise
God for allowing this beautiful child to be a part of our lives. I believe, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this couple will soon realize how truly blessed they are. If you would like to print this information up and give it to them, maybe, it would help them know that everything would be allright. If you would like to correspond by email or share my email address with them, please feel free to do so. May God bless them and you as well for being such a concerned friend. (Please note that the email address given is my work address, and I generally check it Monday, Wednesday and Friday. So if I don't get back to you right away, you'll know why.)
Take care and God bless!
