: I am after information from other mothers on how they have handled periods with a downs child I have a daughter who will be getting hers soon and want to know how others have coped.

My daughter started her period oct 99,she was 11 she turned 12 this march. She handled it better than I. She's an only child so she's with me all the time. One day I had a coupon on the table for tampons and she asked was it was for. So I told her that when you become older girls have a period, now I didnt go into detail on sex. I'm not sure how to handle that part. I would have cramps and mention to her I was on my period, a horse we have on our property would be in heat and you would see blood in the snow. So my daughter felt it was just normal for all females to go through this. Her's started at daycare, she went back into daycare from the bathroom and told the teacher she needed a pad. That's it. She was very proud to be a big girl. She has trouble with all the sticky strips to attach to her underware and the school nurse helps her when needed. She's always been very independent and likes to be very clean. That has helped. It's really not an issue. I would like to have some info on how other Mom's have explained the facts of life to their girls.
