: One 6/1/00, my niece gave birth to a beautiful little girl who has been daignosed with Down Syndrome. Outside the fact that it is a genetic defect caused by an extra chromosome, we really know very little about it. Right now, the pediatrician has stated that she is developmentally normal for a newborn except for the slanted eyes and extra skin on the neck. What more should we look for or expect?

Dana, The most important thing in this child's life and in your niece life is unconditional love. Society tries to make things so hard for people with disabilities but God made us all and he made no mistakes. There may be some developmental delays that will be noticed later but then again there may not be. Each child has special needs but they are not impossible to fulfill. Don't let anyone make you feel
that this child is a mistake or something was wrong with your niece for this to happen. We are blessed to have people that care about us and the others don't matter. My daughter is now 3 years old and she has been through heart surgery, three replacements of tubes in her ears and when she was born the doctors had no hope because it seemed as if everything was going wrong. But prayer is powerful and
don't stop praying for your niece and her child. My daughter also just got out of the hospital after a week of pnemonia. These children are very strong, sometimes stronger than us but what it all boils down to is LOVE conquers all. Whenever someone says your nieces' daughter can't do this or that, don't take it for complete truth. It may take longer but if we don't give up on them they won't give up on themselves.
Keep the faith and give your niece and her daughter much love. Take care and be encouraged.
