Recently I went to find child care for my little guy who is 4 but not toilet trained. I called
Social Services in my area to get the names of some daycare centers who took children not toilet
trained. I was given a handful of names and I pursued to check them out. One center told me to
come check them out after explaining my son's situation. (I told her that he had down syndrome,
didn't need any special care other than diapering. He is very high functioning with no health problems.)
She told me to come in and take a look. One week later I went in to the daycare center with my son
and my 7 year old daughter to look around. The Director of the center came out and told me
that they could not take him. I asked why and she said, "We don't take disabled people here." I
was dumb founded! I said, "Let me get this straight, you're telling me you can't take him because
he has down syndrome?'" She said, "That's right, don't take it personally!" I left and reported her
to social services, and the U.S. Dept of Justice. My daughter was so upset and still talks about what
a hateful lady she was. I haven't heard back from any of my complaints. Does anyone have
any experiece withthis kind of discrimination and is there anything else I should do? Thanks!
