: : : : : My pregnancy recently tested positive for down sydrome.
: : : : : I am 15 weeks and 33 yrs old. We have already had the level II ultra sound and the doctor said that everything looked normal, and that I had a 1% chance of having a down baby. I am still very worried, before this pregnancy I had 2 miscarriages and 1 blight ovum with in a year. My thought is that my body was doing its job by miscarry and that maybe there is something wrong with this baby. I already have two children 13 & 3 yr old with the same man. My question is how easily is it to find abnormalities via level II ultra sound? Does anyone with a down baby have ultra sound pictures that they would share, I would like to try compare with mine. My world feels so devasted and everyone around me says I am over reacting.

: : : : DEAR TAMI, I WAS GIVEN AN ANMIO TO CHECK FOR DOWN SYNDROME AND I DO HAVE ULTRA SOUND PICTURES, SERVERAL BUT ONLY A TRAINED EYE CAN SHOW YOU THE DIFFERENCE. MY SON HAD A THICK FOLD AT THE BACK OF HIS NECK WHICH WAS NOTICABLE DURING THE ULTRASOUND AND SMALLER LIMBS. BUT, AS MELANIE SAID UNLESS YOU HAVE HAD AN AMNIO NOTHING IS FOR SURE. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS HOW YOU COULD HAVE TESTED "POSTIVE" FOR DOWNS AND THEN YOUR DOCTOR TELLING YOU THERE WAS ONLY A 1% CHANCE OF DOWN SYNDROME. EITHER YOU TESTED POSITIVE OR YOU DIDN'T. DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF TESTING YOU HAD.

: : : From Tami.
: : : The AFP tested positive for downs but when we went to the level II ultra sound the dr. said he did not see anything that was abnormal, that is when he said i had a 1% chance. But i have been doing a lot of research since I have been told this and they said sometimes things can be missed for various reasons. I was wondering if at 15 1/2 weeks using a level II ultra sound would the beginnings of down sydrome markers be seen by a trained doctor?

: : dear tami, if it was only an "AFP" test you had then they are very "unreliable"! these test are only 60% accurate, if that. I talked with a woman who tested positive after an AFP test and she had an amnio and it was negative. so if you are very concerned and worried. i would ask my doctor for an amnio just to ease your mind and so you can be prepared.
: : as far as seeing in a high level ultra sound, yes i do think most doctors with a trained eye, such as a "periontologist" which is what i had can detect the physical signs of down syndrome. the characteristics are obvious. again a "thick" neck with the fold, smaller bones, perhaps heart problems, etc.
: : please do not worry over this matter because it sounds like the chances are slim. also, if it will drive you crazy with worry them i would ask for a amnio just to ease you mind.

: from Tami:
: Yesterday I called the dr. that gave the ultra sound and he says If anything looked questionable he would have told me. But here is the kicker I went to my regular obg and told him what they told me and I asked should I still be worried and he said yes. Once again I am devasted again and I dont go for the next ultra sound until sept 21. I dont want to have the amino because of my previous miscarriages and because i have been cramping on and off though-out this pregnancy. What is also weird is when my obg nurses called me they said oh your triple screen can back a little funny, then she said the doctor wanted me to have a level II ultra sound and a amnio, they repeated how unreliable this screen was but now he is telling me I should worry even after the ultra sound showed nothing. I am so worried and no anxiety relief in sight.
