Jim,

Congratulations and take heart, I know that you may have great difficulty believing this right now, but you have been given a wonderful opportunity in being this little girl's daddy.
I have a wonderful little girl, age five, with Down Syndrome and she has been an inspiration to nearly everyone she meets. As far as your expectations go, maintain those for this child just as you would any other. Granted she may not get there as fast as some, but she will get there!
We have made every attempt to treat our daughter the same, with the same discipline and expectations that we have expected from our son, who is older. Thus far, I can honestly say she has brought us nothing but joy. She is an amazing child who is making wonderful accomplishments.
Granted, she is not your typical five year old in many ways, but she knows her abcs, is counting to at least ten, knows colors and shapes. More importantly, she is a sweet, loving child who loves everyone she meets! I know the pain you feel right now is real, but take from one who knows first hand, it will ease with time and as you watch this precious little one grow and learn, you will come to realize that she is a wonderful gift from God. I will say a prayer for you and your wife and little one. God bless!
