: : My husband has been taking Dilantin for about 20 years now. What are some of the side effects?
: : A family member told me that there are some effects that are not good. They can't remember exactlyt
: : what they were, but vaguely remembers them to be pretty bad. Any information? My husband is
: : one to keep quiet about his condition, and really doesn't pay attention to any new things that may
: : be bothersome to him. I do know that he always has been forgetful, but more so lately than ever before.
: : Any connection to the medication?
: REPLY: could be a side effect of the medication, to check these look up the British National Formulary and the ABPI Compendium available from all good referance library's, some information is available on the drug PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLETS which should be supplied by the chemist dispensing the drugs and if not should be available upon request- though these don't contain all the information relating to the drug/s every patient should read these carefully in order that they(or their relatives) can recognise any side effects promptly in order that appropriate action can be taken by the doctor involved also in order that reactions are reported to the proper authority.
Reply: My mother and a friend of mine have both experienced seizure disorders and both were put on Dilantin. My friend was experiencing memory loss, lack of concentration, and equilibrium problems. She consulted with her physician, decreased the dosage of the Dilantin and she is no longer experiencing these ill effects. My mother on the other hand is having all of the above side effects, but her physician at this point has not decreased the dosage.
