: I am not sure what this all means. I have been told that I need to take Tegretol, but I am scared to take medication for the rest of my life. Why are they just diagnosing me, and what causes these episodes?? If OI have had this all my life, why didn't I know?? Any info will help!!

Cheri, I have been diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy due to a small brain tumor. I also
supposedly have had this all my life. I can remember these episodes of mine back into my
teen years. I am now 47 years old. I was put on tegretol and supposedly was to be on it for
the rest of my life also but only stayed on it for 6
months and now take no medication. I couldn't understand from you message what happens
during your episodes. During mine I smell an odor that no one around me smells, I feel like I
am floating up in the air, I hear people talking to each opther, even though no one is there,
parts of my body, such as my arm, seems to get larger or to float or sink, and twice I have had
visual hallucenations. I went to the Doctor because I had the sensation that I was drooling
a lot of the time, although I wasn't drooling, it just felt that way. I believe I went most of my life
undiagnosed because I never complained to
a Doctor before the drooling. Some of the episodes, such as the floating up in the air, I had
done for so much of my life that I just assumed that everyone did that and so I never questioned
it. I have had a 2nd MRI and my brain tumor has not changed any and the Doctor's assume
that I have had it for 30 or more years and it is just very slow growing. I hope this helps you to
see that you are not alone in just being diagnosed with something you are supposed to have
had all your life. I would be very interested in hearing what happens during your episode, if you
don't mind telling me. I go to a neurologist and assume that you do also. Melva
