: I was wondering if a person knows he is having a seizure when it is happening or after it is over. How do they feel, during and after. I have a young child that can't tell me what is going on when he has seizures and I would like to know more about what he is going thru. Thank you!!!
Jamie, I do not know when I am having a seizure.
But I nearly always know afterwards. This is because I return to consciouness slowly and generally over a period of some 25 to 30 minutes. Every thing is very very confused as I return to consciouness and I drift in and out of consciouiness slowly puting my life back together. Another reason that I know that I have had a seizure is due to the fact that I may wake up some 2 or 3 kms away having walked over busy arterial roads and railway tracks etc or in some case I find that I have fallen and cut my head. In yet other occasions not only do I wake in a different place I find that I am wearing differernt clothes having got changed in my consciouness impaired state.
Finally, in about 50% of the cases I know that a seizure is imminent as I experience an aura which I believe in its self is called a simple seizure and precedes a full complex partial seizure. At this time I try and lie down to avoid the risk of injury. However, the aura is so brief (about 1 second) that generally I do not have an opoportunity to lie down before the full seizure is on me. In the other 50% of the cases there is no warning aura and I just wake up confused in a different place from where I remember that I was.
Hope that this helps you to understand the nature of seizures a little more.
