: I had complex partial seizures for 10 years before I had brain surgery to correct it. I took tegretol for 20 years and in Nov. 1999, I got to come off of it for the first time. I too was planning on having children and my neurologist told me that tegretol was the safest anticonvulsant to take while pregnant. I am actively trying, free of any medication, but was willing to take tegretol while trying to conceive. I've also had other health professionals tell me that tegretol is safest. I don't know anything about the anticonvulsants you are taking so I don't know how safe they are. I wish you the best of luck in life and in conceiving.
I've got two children and both were conceived while taking tegretol 800 mg a day. I must warn you I had terrible seizures while I was pregnant anyway but I have two boy one that is 10 and one 11. The 11 year old has been diagnosed with a seizure disorder much milder than mine but the frequency was alarming now he takes carbitol which is a long lasting or time released tegretol. My 10 year old now has to be checked out and does have some of the warning signs.. bed wetting even on strong meds to prevent wetting. Never occured to me he could be having seizures. Both Kids are on the honor roll and live very happy lives even the one having all the seizures. I had 37 gran mals with my 11 year old and 35 with my 10 year old. I spent alot of time in the hospitol but I have to say with everything that has transpired I would have it now other way.. with the exception I passed this nasty little disease to them. That I must tell you is the thing that bothers me the most. Do some soul searching.. find a good supportive church group or some sort of support group and make sure you are working out before concieveing... that way you can relieve stress with a good work out while pregnant. I must also warn you tegretol can either make you loose your appetite or increase it while pregenant I gained 100 lbs but after pregnancies becvame anorexic and had to switch to depekote. I just retired as a swimsuit model though so don't worry you can loose it if it happens. Sorry so lengthy but had lots to say on this matter. Oh yeah find a good high risk OB before hand interview them the way you would a babysitter. Mine was and still is my lifeline. He or she will be you main point of interest during those 9 months. Feel free to email me if any other questions or just want to chat.
