: I have been having CP seizures for the last two years due to an auto accident. I have been switched from one medication to another and am now on Tegretol XR, Klonopin, and Prozac. My neuro is looking to switch me from the Tegretol to either Lamictal or Depakote and I have not been able to get much information on either one. My husband and I would also like to start a family within the next 6 months and are also curious as to what type of effects these could have on a fetus.
: If anyone has any answers, it would be greatly appreciated!!
I have 3 healthy children all conceived while on an anti-convulsant. My 1st was conceived while taking Dilantin and after her birth the doc switched me on to Tegretol since I wanted more children. My boys were both conceived while taking Tegretol. Even though it is "safer" there are still risks. Nueral-tube defects are the most common and could be serious and the others that my doc told me about were hair lip and cleft palette. Your OB-GYN, who should by all means be a high risk doc, should have you take extra dosages of folic acid. This tends to lower the risk of any defects. God bless you and good luck on becoming a parent. It's the most rewarding thing I have done.
