: I'm interested in what sort of contraception other ladies use while taking epilepsy medication. I know that some epilepsy medication reduces the effect of some contraceptive pills. I'm taking Lamictal and Tegretol and I have just started taking Diane-35 pills to clear my acne. Diane-35 is also a contraceptive pill. I'm not sexually active so I don't intend to use the Diane-35 as a contraceptive just yet but I was just wondering for the future. Any advice?
Vanessa, This is something I know too well!! All anti-convulsants lower the effectivness of birth control methods (except for condoms, IUD's and diaphrams). I only know this because I have 3 children. The doc told me when I was taking birth control pills so I wasn't surprised when I conceived my 1st child. After my 2nd us born I decided to have Norplant and low and behold 2 years into it I conceived #3. This was all due to the contraindications of the 2 drugs. So by all means if your not ready to have a baby use a secondary method. Better yet talk to your GYN about whats best for you so you don't become a Mommy too soon.
