In Reply to: Gaining unintentional bulk from running? posted by Julie on June 30, 2000 at 19:42:28:

: I have now been running for about 7 weeks (used to do cardio on an elliptical crosstrainer), and have successfully managed to get up to an average of 5-7 miles every day.

: Unfortunately, I feel bigger, thicker. My diet has not changed at all, yet I am gaining inches even though I am running almost daily.

: Is it possible that I have built up muscle that has not yet started to reduce the fat in key areas (particularly my hips, rear)? I understand that with patience, the result may change, but I need to find a solution to reduce the bulk (other than a sudden, strict diet) right away.

: Help!
: Thanks!

>> Hi Julie, Please don't worry about the excess inches, it's your body's way of compensating. Two months ago, I also began a weekly exercise program consisting of aerobics, racquetball, steps, light weights, and watching my diet (I exercise every day except Sunday). I have lost only seven pounds, yet my body is looking and feeling much better. I've lost inches in my stomach, and waist, but have also gained a few inches in my thighs, which I attributed to racquetball (3 days a week). But most important, I feel good and look healthy. So I overlook the muscle gain in some areas because my body is responding well to the consistency and variety of exercises. Just keep it up, you will begin to see overall improvements. My only input is that you include other exercise activities to your program. Good luck. :-)
