Running is the best way (other than cross country skiing) to burn the most calories in a given time. But since this seems to not be an option, perhaps you can begin riding a bike and work up to where you can ride intensely for 30-40 min. If you are walking on a treadmill, try walking at the fastest speed you feel most comfortable and begin adding some incline. You might want to try adding short intervals of running if this does not cause problems for you. Another way to increase calorie burning while walking is to use walking sticks while swinging your arms. This is known to increase expenditure by 10-15%. Good luck
