: I am going to start going to the gym and start working out. But i was just wondeirng how much of the time should be concentrated on my arms and how much on my legs. Also should i run? I havnt been but if it gets you in good shape i will pick it up. Any other tips on how to get in good shape and get muscles would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton.

Hi Sid:
Your ambitions and questions are quite common for someone beginning weight training. Here's the best advice anyone can give you:

1. Concentrate on whole body workouts three times a week (specilization on your arms and legs or any other lagging bodypart can come later)
2. Concentrate on the basic, movements that work the largest muscles of the body: bench press, squats, barbell curls, chin ups, shoulder presses, calf raises, bent over rowing and some quick abdominal work.
3. Run if you wish to lose a few pounds but refrain from jogging if you're trying to gain weight.
4. Limit each exercise to 3-4 sets, 6-10 reps and add weight as you get stronger.

Good luck!
JOHN
