I wouldn't recommend squats and deadlifts to a beginner unless he or she has someone qualified to teach them the correct technique. If free weights are used for the bench press exercises (or any free weight exercise that puts the weight above the head or chest), a spotter is recommended. Squats and deadlifts primarily work the lower body not the shoulders.
