I see people in the gym all the time doing sit-up after sit-up and crunch after crunch trying to lose "love handles" or a "stomach" with no luck. This is a very common myth in the health and fitness community. These people simply have strong ab muscles covered by fat. The only way to lose your "handles" is to expend more calories than you take in.
The walking is great for that. I would recommend you continue, maybe even some light jogging if you are up for it. It is also good that you go to the gym, but you may want to re-think your training approach. Building muscle speeds up your metabolism, which is crucial for proper weight control so don't just do exercises that target your abs (relatively small muscles). You have got to target those big muscles like your quads, glutes, and pecs. Do some squats if you can hadle it. They are by far the best exercise you can do to improve your metabolism as well as your total level of fitness. Just take it easy at first, and ask for technique and safety advice from friends at the gym to prevent injury.
In your post on weight loss you left out the most important ingredient for becoming free of love handles, DIET. You can run every day and lift 4 hours in the gym every night and you will still have love handles if you aren't eating right.
