Here is a pretty cool workout program for beginners. I consider the first 3 months to be the beginning stage. During this stage you should stick to the basic lifts and avoid working your body too hard. Right now your body is not used to strength training and can be injured by it very easily. You may feel like your aren't doing enough but you are. As always, proper form is critical so make sure you know it before you even think about starting. Also, take a few minutes to stretch and warm up before lifting any heavy weights.
Monday: Bench Press (3 sets/10 reps)
Military Press (3/10)
Bicep Curl (3/10)
Tuesday: Abs and Cardio
Wednessday: Squats (3/10)
Calf Raises (3/10)
Thursday: Abs and Cardio
Friday: Bent Over Row (3/10)
Shoulder Shrugs (3/10)
Lat Pulldown (3/10)
This routine will hit all the basic muscle groups without putting too much stress on any of them. At this time, you should also begin to work on your diet. What you eat has an enormous amount to do with how you look, especially as you get older so it would be a good idea to get into the habit of a healthy diet now.
