Can I give you a little physiology lesson Joe? Take it or leave it. There is little direct evidence for fiber "splitting" as you call it. Body builders and power lifters tend to have more fibers, but this may be a genetic effect rather a training effect. When a muscle contracts maximally, fast twitch fibers get recruited. These fibers don't kick in unless intensity is relatively high. As the muscle gets more trained, more of those fibers are recruited, resulting in increased strength. Maybe fast twitch fibers are the "deep" fibers you are referring to.
