Smoking is considered one of the major culprits in Macular Degeneration, a degenerative condition affecting the retina. If you cannot stop smoking, be sure to protect your eyes from UV and blue light rays (wear amber/brown sunglasses) and eat foods containing lutein and zeaxanthin (spinach, kale) and beta-carotene (apricots, red grapes), but by far the best thing you can do to protect yourself from MD is to quit smoking - ASAP.
I wish you very good luck.
