My husband is a stroke survivor who is presently confined to a wheelchair. He had a retinal detachment about eight months ago and silicone oil was placed in his eye. It's my understanding that the silicone oil should be removed within a year but his doctor doesn't really want to do it because of his present condition as a result of the stroke. He said that he has left it in on some patients for years and some for life. I heard of one instance of this where there was a cornea problem because the silicone oil was not removed. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with leaving silicone oil in the eye more than a year?
