I just found this message board, and it seems there is a good group here who post messages and replies on a regular basis. I've tried several others and either there are a couple of friends who only talk to each other or no one posts anything for weeks at a time.
I was diagnosed with FM more than 10 yrs. ago. That was back when there was not very much info to be found. I had a hard time trying to find out what it was and what it was all about. As you all know, it's all over the place now.
One thing I have learned is that it's different for everybody. Different pain, stiffness, mental and emotional symptoms. Another thing I've learned is that the older I get, the harder it is to function. I am now 51 years old, marrried, with three adult children and a 14 yr. old. I had a career in geriatric nursing and loved it. I worked myself up from an aide to a RN, from there a floor nurse, then Assistant Director of Nursing, to Director of Nursing to Manager of a large Rest Home. I had to quit working about 4 years ago due to my inability to keep getting up and going to work, work all day, then come home and function as a "live person". For these past 4 years, things have gone steadily downhill. I can't do much of the housework, can't do much shopping or walking or sitting or lying down.In fact, there is not much I can still do without a great deal of pain and fatigue. Everyday is the same, yet different. I have problems in almost every muscle in my body. Also, I have pain in my joints. I am totally exhausted after getting up and getting dressed.
I am in the process of trying to get disability from Soc. Security. It has been a long, hard, humiliating process of doctors who no nothing about this problem, psychiatrists who know even less, and the people in our Social Security program who will do anything to make you quit trying. I go for my hearing before an administrative judge on the 13th. It has taken over 1 year to get this far, and I understand that after the hearing, I'll have to wait at least 6 months to get the judge's decision.
Is anyone having a problem with Social Security? If so,what else can I expect?
Thanks for listening!
