: : Has anyone had a bone spur in the joint between the foot and big toe? Has anyone used any type of alternative medicine or exercise with any success? I would like to avoid surgery, if possible, but pain seems to be getting worse.

: It sounds like you are getting an arthritic 1st metatarsal phalangeal joint
: called hallux rigidis or hallux limitus.
: It's possible to maybe have an orthotic type device for your foot to put in the shoe to prevent motion of the joint when you walk.
: which often will stop the pain, or with the help of an injection.
: This condition is usually because of a very specific problem with the foot, an elevated 1st metatarsal,
: so typically exercises don't help too much.

I, too, have hallux limitus, and my Dr suggested searching under that name. There is so much to read, some helpful, some not, it's amazing! At any rate, the information I've read coincides with what my Dr has said. And while I've never had an operation, it seems to be the best option to me.
