Gout is a arthritic-like, painful condition caused by an abundance of uric acid crystals settling in the extremities, usually toes, fingers, and sometimes knees and elbows. There is no cure for gout per se, but you can live with it if you watch your diet, get lots of exercise, and take daily medicine under doctor's care (allopurinol). To alleviate an attack, you may get relief with non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs and/or codeine. Lots of water and rest is best. Big offenders which bring on gout attacks are organ meats, high protein red meats, and most of all, unfortunately, alcohol. Attacks are incredilby painful. I've had the tendency for years (inherited) and haven't had an attack in years. I jog, try to eat well (fresh fruits and veggies) and avoid stress. I'm aware of my alcohol intake. Yeasty wines and beers are probably best to avoid. Drink moderately or expect an attack when you least expect it.
