When one of my grandparents was in a hospital bed for an extended period of time, the nurses suggested a "good pair of lace-up shoes" to prevent drop foot. Another grandparent, who was just released from an extended stay in a hospital, had a "box" of sorts installed at the foot of his bed that he was to rest his feet against to keep them upright. These are the only two methods I've heard of from medical officials. If you do locate a more comfortable alternative, I'd appreciate hearing about it as well.
