I am a 24 year old competitive ballroom dancer myself with a bunion on the right foot that is getting worse. I do 3 hours of training a night (5-6 nights a week) in 3 inch high heels. You may imagine how much pain I am in all the time with the bunion getting worse and the joint starting to stiffen up. I have been to Osteopaths, Podiatrists, and recently an Orthopaedic Surgeon for opinions. In the meantime while I am making my mind up about surgery (which I am not keen on as it will stop me from training for over 6 mnths) I have been taught to strap my foot up to stop the process of the bunion getting worse. If you can get hold of an 'Innovations' shopping catalogue, you will be able to find the bunion foot strap which pulls the big toe outward when you are sleeping. Use this when you sleep at night (it hurts for the first week but your joints will stretch and get used to it) - this has been approved by my Orthopaedic Surgeon. In the daytime, you should use a micropore tape to strap around your foot (around the whole foot just below the bunion) to release the weight bearing pressure on the bunion itself. Also, when the pain gets extreme, you should manipulate the joint by pulling your big toe up and outward, and rotate it around - this has been recommended by the Osteopath who treats girls from the Royal Ballet in London. These are the tricks which have kept me going and hopefully will slow down the process of the bunion getting worse. I hope you treat it soon because I feel that I should have done all these religiously earlier on in my dance career. I am in great pain now as it is getting quite bad. I am going to try one last resort soon before I think hard again about surgery - acupuncture. I shall let you know how it goes if you are still keen.

: hi, I just had a bunion diagnosed this morning. It started as an injury from dancing, and I also have a tendency to pronate. I do wear wide toed shoes already. The problem is mild now, but, as I am 32 y.o., I would appreciate anyone's advice about different things I can try to alleviate the problem.
