during while I struggled with acne (seemed like a century), I developed a cyst behind my ear less than half a dozen times. About four of these had no soreness.

the bump behind your ear may be an acne cyst. If it lasts longer than a week it could be something else. Since you can't see it get someone you know to take a look at it.
