Dear Lynda,

Wow. I can't believe it. That's only the second time I've heard of that, and I'm astounded. My neice, who is now 18, was born with "Arnie Chiari". She wasn't diagnosed until she was 3 years old, and not walking yet. Her parents and doctor waited too long. They did brain surgery on her, at 3 years of age. I understand that it's a form of spina bifida. She now has a shunt, which runs from her brain into her stomach. Her parents went through hell. For a long time after the surgery, she had to be fed via a feeding tube inserted into her stomach. As of today, she is classified as retarded. I was under the impression that the retardation was secondary to Arnold Chiari, but now I wonder. You don't sound like you have any impediments. I wonder if they damaged her brain during the surgery. When I was pregnant with my first child, my OB/GYN did research of this syndrome, to see what the chances of my baby having it. But, it's my sister-in-law's family that has genetic birth defects, so they said my kids should be ok. I'm going to that site right now, and look up more about it. Thank you for your posting.
