I am intrigued that you mention that your father lost his hearing suddenly due to his auto immune system. I also lost my hearing suddenly when i was a teenager (docs said it was a virus that settled on the nerve) but it still puzzled me. I was diagnosed with an auto immune disorder (graves or hyperthyroid disease) several years ago and now am wondering if there is any link between the two. If maybe I was suffering from this disease as a teenager and didnt know it. Anyone have any thoughts or know if there is any relation to the two?
My ENT gave me steroids when it first happened - mostly to clear up the fluid in my ear that was making me dizzy after the nerve burst - and to see if it was just an infection. But my hearing never got better. I'm down to about 10-15% hearing now.
