: :Ann,

: I, too, have experienced the same malady, mine coming on October 22. For no apparent reason, I'm totally deaf in my right ear. I've been now to two specialists who both are leaning toward a virus as the culprit. The most recent, and most thorough specialist placed me on 3 medications - Papaverine (to stimulate blood flow), Prednizone (to reduce any swelling), and Famvir (an anti-viral agent). While I initially suffered from much ringing and other high pitch noises, at least for now, the noise has been reduced to a soft hiss and occasional brief ringing. I'm due for another checkup next week. I'm frantic. Just came back from highly credentialed ear, nose and throat DR (otolaryngologist) who confirmed sudden hearing loss, quite severe, no apparant cause. I start tomorrow on steroids for 2 weeks as my only possible way to reverse this.

: : I mentioned that one week ago I started taking Quinine Sulfate, 325MG at night. This is the only new thing happening medically to me. The DR ignored this as a cause.

: : I just completed some internet research which names quinine as a possible cause for sudden hearing loss.

: : HELP! What's known about this?

: : Please help.
