Sporadic hearing loss???

My hearing will be ok one day and then I will catch myself saying "what?" a million times on another day. I went to an audiologist who said my hearing was fine. Yet today is another "bad hearing day" in that when there are any background noises or muffled voices I can't hear a thing. I also get many ear infections in my left ear (only) and have severe pain in the same ear when I fly. For days after words it feels clogged,painful, and the hearing is as though someone stuck cotton in my ear. Does anyone have any similar experiences. I find it puzzling...
