Here's another interesting Hair Cell Regeneration Webpage:

"Auditory hair cells are the first relay station in the auditory pathway, they transform sound waves into electrical and chemical events that are conveyed to the brain via the auditory nerve. In most cases of deafness auditory hair cells are lost, thus impairing the auditory pathway at its very origin."
