: : My 85 yr. old mother has been hospitalized for one week suffering from congestive heart failure. Her doctors say they can't aggressively treat her heart problems because it would complicate other health conditions she suffers from. At first, they considered a pacemaker but decided against it for now. The main treatment so far has been to use LASIX to remove the fluid build-up in her lungs. I think she will be released from the hospital this week and I am scared to death about what to do to help her. Does anyone have any suggestions about activity, exercise, diet, etc? PLEASE HELP!

: I was diagnosed with CHF in 1984 and my only treatment up until late 1999 was Lasix to help remove water from the tissues. This makes it easier for the heart to pump. Any cardiologist will tell you that it is not possible to strengthen the heart muscle itself but that exercise will open the blood vessels so that it is easier for the heart to pump blood throughout the circulatory system. This in turn will spare the heart and let it help the Lasix to work. If the heart is not very enlarged you can live many normal years with CHF.

: I was very frightened when I was first diagnosed but I got used to it and lived with it. It took 15 years for the heart to deteriorate to the point where I am now being considered for a transplant.

: I hope this helps you. I'm sure your doctor will be happy to answer any questions that may arise about your mother. My doctors were always happy to talk to my adult son about my condition. They felt it appropriate that grown children ask questions about their parent's conditions to be better able to help them.

: Best wishes,
: Sybil

I am 29 years old and was also recently diagnosed with CHF. I agree with Sybil. Exercise is important like walking no matter how little she can do it. Eating a low sodium diet is also going to help get rid of that fluid. I hope I can maintain a good balance for as long as I can. I would love to hear from you Sybilto find out if you were able to conceive any children. I don't have any and know it would be high risk but would love to hear that people are able to do it.

Thanks.
Claire
