I am 64 years old with a heart that has been working at only 20% of its normal capacity. (The ejection fraction is 15%.) The heart is tremendously enlarged. I have CHF (congestive heart failure) and I am very prone to V-tachs (ventricular tachycardia), so I have had an AICD with pacemaker implanted. There are two types of tachycardia, the fatal and the benign. I have the fatal kind and I am a survivor of SCD (sudden cardiac death). The doctor recommended a heart transplant for me. I went and had the tests and am now on the list. However, I believe I will turn it down. If I were your age, I would probably go ahead with it, but I have lived a full and interesting life and don't want to go through the operation and the following recuperation. You, on the other hand, are younger, with wife and kids and need to be there for them. As to the finances, I have been hospitalized 6 times in the last 9 months and owe the hospital over $50,000 that my insurance did not pay. I have found out that the hospital will consider "charity cases" and I have filled out the proper hospital form to receive relief in the form of the hospital accepting my insurance and considering it to be full payment. This has nothing to do with the government but is through the hospital itself. You might try a call to your hospital to see whether they have a similar program.
Best wishes and good luck,
