Over the last few years, my teenage daughter (now 17)complained that her heart would start racing, especially during PE, and would not quit for 10 to 15 minutes afterward. She is involved in a rather agressive Colorguard program and during a performace last October her heart started to pound. She continued the 15 minute half time show and hardly got off the field without assistance. An ambulance was near by and clocked her heart at 230 beats per minute. By the time we got her to the emergency room, it had gone down to a 'mere' 115 bpm. We headed to a Cardiologist and after many tests, told us that she had SVT (and the accompanying mytro valve prolapse) and he wanted to put her on a low dosage of beta-blocker . . . . for the rest of her life. That was a little hard for me to take as I am not a big fan of medication. I asked him if there were other alternatives and he did give me some on how they might be stopped. He also told me vaguely about ablation. For the past year we have tried these alternatives and for the most part they work pretty well with episodes occuring perhaps once every 5 weeks and lasting under 10 minutes. Actually, stretching out on the floor seems to work best for her, or bending over a chair or fence. However, my questions are many.....
Is her heart damaged when this occurs? Is there any natural treatment for this other than beta blockers? Would a magnesium and/or Co-enzyme Q-10 supplement work? Is there no natural rememdy available? I would like to hear some details from anyone who has had the ablation work done.
My cardiologist did mention that with her condition she is possibly at risk of a stroke. We need to make some decisions here. Thanks for any help you can send my way.
