: This is the first time I have ever posted a message on this board, but I am rather worried and if anyone can help me understand this alittle more I would really appreciate it.

: My father is 73 years old and has had 3 past heart attacks. The doctor told him today that he would need a pacemaker. Niether one of us are familiar with them and what to expect from the surgery, recovery and aftercare, also how his life will be after recieving the implant. If there is anyone out there that can offer any kind of imformation please email me. I don't know where else to go or who to talk to.

My 92 year old mother had a pacemaker implanted last July. She has had no problems, has healed nicely. She had no choice, her heart rate was in the low 40s', she has congested heart failure, she has CHF for the past 15 years and is still going strong. The surgery does not last long and they don't put you out, you have a local and an IV that kind of puts you in lala land. There is very little pain afterwards, you cannot lift your left arm over your head for about 6 weeks, then after that you can do about everything you did before, there really is no problem with the procedure.

Liz
