Hi Mary!
I know what you and your husband are going through. My husband at the age of 35 (15 years ago) had to make the same choice for the same reason regarding the aortic valve, however he also needed a mitral valve replacement. He had always been in good health no problems, and this was found during a physical. He opted for the mechnical valves for the same reason your husband is leaning towards. I do suggest you and your husband discusses this in length with his surgeon, his cardiologist, any other physician he may see, and research all your options.
It is not a given that a mechnical valve never has to be replaced. My husband just had his 5th mechnical mitral valve replaced in 15 years. He has been on coumadin for the 15 years without any real problem, he just needs to be careful (the bloodthinner can cause excessive bleeding - he is a jeweler and uses his hands alot and often cuts himself), he has his bloodwork checked as scheduled, and remembers to take his medication.
The reason for the multiple surgery had to do with endocarditis not so much the valve. If you are not familiar with this, you have time now to find out. Use your time wisely.
Good luck and God Bless!!!
