An EKG, also referred to as an ECG, lets a doctor analyze the electrical activity and nerve conduction pathways of the heart including the rhythm of the heart. People suspected of having heart disease are given an EKG as part of the diagnostic process. It can reveal any problems with abnormal heart rhythms, inadequate blood and oxygen supply to the heart, excessive thickening (hypertrophy) of the heart muscle and death of any heart tissue due to a heart attack.
