: My husband is scheduled to have his liver biopsy next Monday. We have
: proabably been
: living in denial since his dx last July. He feels and looks great and his
: initial blood work was "good"--
: or so his doctor said. He is really nervous about the procedure itself and
: of course, about the
: results. Our questions are: Is this a painful procedure and does the
: patient usually receive any
: kind of sedative?; will he be able to return to work the next day--he works
: in a steel mill driving a
: forklift?; how long does it uaually take to get the results?; if the doc
: recommends treatment, is it
: always the best option? I know that my husband does not handle any type of
: discomfort well, he
: becomes cranky and VERY irritable and I've read that tx sometimes
: intensifies these traits. And
: although usually he's usually a happy-go-lucky guy, if something really
: bothers him he gets really
: down so I'm wondering about the tx causing depression. His doc asked if he
: had a tendency to
: get depressed and normally he doesn't, but then he has never been really
: sick or incapacitated in
: any way. Sorry for being so wordy, but we're both a little bit stressed
: right now.
: Thanks for your help
: Blessings--South
Hi South, I am a woman who has had 2 liver biospys and I can tell your husband some information. Also search on the web liver biospy the sites can give you more details. The painful part was when the Dr. numbed the area it felt like a hot stinging sensation only lasts for a few seconds then it's gone. But what was more painful to me was not being able to go to the bathroom for the 2 hours afterwards: I just had to have too much coffee afterwards! I took 5 days off work you will know how much time you need day by day. The biospy does not take long . The results are known in days. Also they do give you something to relax you. To me going to the dentist is worse. The biospy is important it will give your Dr. valuable information and if there is a health concern they can pinpoint soultions.
